Jackson County Fair

The Jackson County Fair is a popular event that has been held every year for more than a century. Each summer, the community gathers for a week of fun, food, entertainment and activities. The Jackson County fair has always been one of the earliest county fairs in the state, running during the third week of July. The fair is organized and headed by the Jackson County Fair board. The Jackson County Fairgrounds is located in the southwest area of Wellston, off State Route 93. The local 4-H clubs play a major role during the fair. In the south section of the fairgrounds are the animal barns. Animals raised by 4-H include sheep, cows, rabbits, chickens, pigs and horses. The animal barns and auctioning stages were all recently upgraded and dedicated to Joe Morgan. The animal auctions are held on Thursday during the fair. A new building near the animal houses was recently constucted to house other exhibits by the 4-H members. Inside, you can see the presentations on agriculture and related topics. On the far north end of the fairgrounds is a commercial building, where companies display their products and services to the local residents. The Jackson County Fair starts on Monday in the third week in July and wraps up on Saturday night. Throughout the week, special activities and entertainment are provided. Traditionally, Tuesday night is the first demolition derby. The finals are run on the following Saturday. Motorcycle racing is held on Thursdays. Special musical performances are held on Friday nights. Groups such as Kentucky Headhunters, Pirates of the Mississippi and Marty Stewart have appeared. Various other events are scheduled on other evenings. Many other fun activities such as a baby contest, tractor pulls, watermelon eating contests, and egg tosses are held throughout the week. Throughout the midway of the fairgrounds, food booths, rides and other attractions are arranged. The grandstand is situated in front of the center stage of entertainment for the fair.
