Wellston Coal Festival

In the fall of 1973, Wellston held its centennial celebration with much pomp and cirumstance. Every year since then, the Wellston Ohillco Society has held a free festival in downtown Wellston. The Coal Festival begins on the Wednesday after Labor Day with an evening parade and runs to the end of the week. Free entertainment at the Coal Festival includes rides, food booths, carnival games, and other attractions. Contests, games, student government day and other events are scheduled throughout the festival. In addition to rides and food booths, informational stands for companies and organizations also make up part of the Coal Festival. Saturday evening, the festivities wrap up with another parade where the Coal Festival Queen finalists ride into the center stage. During the ceremony, the new queen is announced. The Coal Festival is a production of the Wellston Ohillco Society. The society also presents scholarships to local high school seniors.
